Dr. Ambrish Mithal is presently the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division at Medanta, The Medicity where he has established one of India’s premier diabetes and endocrinology centres.
- Initiated and launched ISBMR – International Osteoporosis Foundation Program on Physician Awareness 2005-2007. (IOF Worldwide Congress- Bangkok, September 27-30, 2005.)
- Lead Author of the Asian Audit- Epidemiology of Fractures in Asia, an IOF Project/publication, 2009.
- Involved in establishing one of the country’s premier endocrinology and diabetes services, and a DNB Endocrinology post graduate training program at Apollo Hospital, Delhi (1999-2009)
- Scientific Co-chair of the first IOF Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Osteoporosis, Singapore 2010
- Chair , Asia Pacific Regional Council, International Osteoporosis Foundation 2010

- Dr Mithal was the first DM in Endocrinology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1987), and subsequently served on the faculty at Sanjay Gandhi PGI, Lucknow (1988-1998) where he was instrumental in setting up the Department of Endocrinology.
- Dr Mithal is immediate Past President, Endocrine Society of India and the Chairperson, Bone and Joint Decade, India. He is the founder, Past President and currently Chief Advisor to the Indian Society Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR).
- He chairs the Nutrition Working Group of the Committee of Scientific Advisors, International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF, Switzerland).
AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS:
Dr Mithal has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Prominent among these are:
- Indian Medical Association Academy of Medical Sciences Award for “Distinguished contribution in the field of medicine”-2007.
- The Fogarty Fellowship (Harvard Medical School), in 1992-93,
JICA fellowship (Japan) in 1996, - Boy Frame award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (Adult Working Group) in 2004,
- IOF Amgen HealthProfessionals Award (for ISBMR) in 2005, and various awards and citations from the IMA/DMA from time to time, including Doctor of the year in 2005.
- He has been cited in the Limca Book of Records since 2005.
His major current areas of research interest include diabetes and the heart, evaluation of new therapies for diabetes, vitamin D nutrition in Indians, and prevention of osteoporotic fractures. Dr Mithal is also principal investigator in several diabetes drug trials.
