Statin have become almost part of all the prescriptions atleast in diabetic and cardiac patients. Other than lowering the levels of lipid there has be benefit in fracture risk reduction. There has been some controvery in this issue. The recent meta-analysis by Lui et al. has shown that statins significantly increased BMD at lumbar spine [standardized mean difference (SMD) 0.15, 95% CI 0.090.22], total hip (SMD 0.22, 95% CI 0.170.27) and femoral neck (SMD 0.19, 95% CI 0.090.29). The results of this study suggest that statins may help improve and maintain BMD at the lumbar spine, hip and femoral neck, especially in Caucasians and Asians.
