3rd Indian Osteoporosis Conference (IOC)
Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, famous for its pearl and kabbabs, warmly welcomed the delegates of the 3rd Indian Osteoporosis Congress on the 22nd of October 2011.
The Indian Osteoporosis Congress, is an annual, multi-specialty event, which serves as a platform for discussions, debates and exchange of new ideas wrt the disease, diagnosis and treatment options of the ‘Silent disease’ Osteoporosis.
As per the IOF database, 1 out of 8 males and 1 out of 3 females in India suffers from osteoporosis, making India one of the largest affected countries in the world. Expert groups peg the number of osteoporosis patients at approximately 26 million (2003 figures) with the numbers projected to increase to 36 million by 2013.Two points worth noting about osteoporosis in India – the high incidence among men and the lower age of peak incidence compared to Western countries. The incidence of hip fracture is 1 woman to 1 man in India.
Hence to gather a national perspective key opinion leaders from various parts of the country descended into Hyderabad for an interactive one day deep, thread bare discussion of the same. Eminent personalities from the fields of Endocrinology, Orthopedics, Rheumatology and Spine presented, discussed and challenged the current perspectives of the disease. International speakers Prof Steve Boonen and Prof Erik Fink graced the occasion and shared the global perspectives on Osteoporosis.
The scientific sessions very interactive and lively, with time running short to address all the queries. The delegates appreciated the event and took back many a key learnings from the program!
