11th Annual Conference of ISBMR

The department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore hosted the 11th National Conference of the Indian Society of Bone and Mineral Research on 27th and 28th Nov 2015 which was preceded by a preconference CME – for Post graduate teaching on 26th November 2015.

About 45 national and International Experts in the field of metabolic bone disorders led the deliberations. More than 500 delegates participated in this event. The conference was inaugurated on 27th evening, Dr. George D’souza, Dean, St. Johns research Institute, Bangalore was the chief guest for the evening and was also attended by administrators both from the ISBMR and CMC.

The “MMS Ahuja oration” was reintroduced this year and was delivered by Prof. Nikhil Tandon. He gave a splendid talk on the impact of Vitamin D on musculoskeletal system, fracture risk and fall prevention. In memory of Professor S P Teotia, the first “Teotia memorial oration” was delivered by Dr Ambrish Mithal. The first guidelines for Vitamin D recommendations in India was introduced by him to provide guidance to clinicians for the assessment, treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency in India based on available and expert consensus.

There were special quiz sessions organized for MBBS, MD/DNB (Internal Medicine) and DM/DNB(Endocrine) students. 20 medical colleges from different parts of Tamil Nadu and elsewhere participated in these events. There were 32 scientific abstracts presented during the platform/poster sessions during the conference. Attractive cash prizes and medals were awarded at the Valedictory function.

The following topics were covered during the 3 days –Post menopausal osteoporosis and the latest trends in its treatment, vitamin D deficiency, sclerotic bone disorders, parathyroid disease, post organ transplantation bone disease, diabetes associated bone disease and thyroid related bone disorders. These sessions were summarised as meet the professor, symposiums and debates.

This conference was designated by the Centre for Accreditation, Dr. MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu for a maximum of 30 CME credits under Category 1.
